Vossloh Fastening Systems has developed a rail fastening system for slab tracks with no concrete shoulder. It distributes the lateral forces through brackets of a new type, is suitable for use at extreme temperatures even lower than -40℃ and offers an excellent economic performance in both manufacturing and maintenance. The advantage of slab tracks with support shoulders is that they can transfer the higher lateral forces which moving trains exert on the rail fastenings without needing any other design measures. For that reason, they are used in most of the countries that have high-speed railway lines. To date, Japan is the only country to have installed rail fastenings for slab track on high-speed lines without concrete shoulders on a significant scale. With this setup, the lateral forces are dissipated through ribbed plates and sleeper screws, which are fastened directly to the track slab. China is at present also testing this design. Vossloh Fastening Systems' System 306 is in use there on the test track.
