The Isle of Wight is famed for many things not least its heritage railway. Jon Lawson finds out more about its 70-year-old carriages. At just 8.5 miles long, the Ryde Pier Head to Shanklin heritage rail line on the Isle of Wight may be short, but it is busy. Over a million passengers a year travel on it, using it as a genuine means of travel along the east side of the island, as well as a tourist experience. With a resident island population of only 120,000, the annual summer influx of a million-plus holiday-makers swell the passenger numbers. The Isle of Wight (the name comes from the Romans, it is not a misspelling of the colour!) off the south coast of the UK, measures only 23 by 13 miles and is known for its sands, striking white cliffs, almost sub-tropical climate and the world-famous Cowes yachting regatta.
