One important inn ovation that came with the introduction of the 1998 summer timetable in Germany was the first regular service with the ICE 2, making use of the "half-train" concept. Trains operating between Berlin and Cologne are split or joined in Hamm. This procedure provides through workings on the lines serving both the Ruhr and Wupper valleys. saving passengers the need to change. The author describes the underlying concept and practical implementation of the ICE 2 train sets that weredeveloped for this sort of operation.Moving on to the third generation of ICEs (ICE 3), he summarizes the requirements resulting from operating across borders and from meeting the European option, explains the salient features of the concept and presents the expectations in terms ofsignificant decreases in journey times in the trans-European high-speed network.The final part of the article takes a look at the tilting intercity (ICT) train sets that are scheduled to enter service in 1999 and which, for the first time ever, offer the same level of comfort as the ICEs away from the main trunk routes.
