What is evidence-based practice?

Imagine you wake up sneezing one morning and you have a sore, scratchy throat and an achy feeling all over. "I'm coming down with a cold" is a common refrain as you increase your dose of vitamin C, get a little more rest and, maybe, some chicken soup. Soon, you'll be back in business - you hope! Does this sound like how you handle an impending cold? Many of us have been taught that high dosages of vitamin C can help stave off, or at least limit, the common cold. But where did this treatment originate? Is it medical fact or merely folk prescription? These questions are what evidence-based practice (EBP) is all about.
