Zika Virus: Implications for Medical Imaging Professionals

Zika virus was first isolated in April 1947 from a rhesus macaque monkey from the Zika Forest of Uganda. In 1952, the virus was discovered to be infectious to humans, with the first cases documented in Uganda, followed by Tanzania and Nigeria. By the 1960s and throughout the 1980s, isolated cases were documented in other African countries, including the Central African Republic, Egypt, Gabon, and Sierra Leone, as well as parts of Asia, including India, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam. Despite its wide spread, only 14 cases were reported overall. Of these documented cases, all were considered mildly symptomatic, with no deaths or hospitalizations reported.
