Non-consumable anodes are a commodity, which the aluminum industry has long dreamed of. Already when the industrial production of primary aluminum began, the inventors of the Hall-Heroult smelting process hoped to invent inert anode materials in order to avoid regularly replacing spent carbon anodes. Carbon dioxide and fluorocarbons from traditional anode use also add significantly to the excess of greenhouse gases threatening our environment.
