The method involves feeding back the unconverted fuel of an anode (12) of a fuel cell (11). An inert gas is supplied without a countermeasure at the anode. The nitrogen is diffused from a cathode (13) to the anode. The partial pressure of the fuel at the anode is increased according to increase of pressure at the anode and cathode so that pressure at the anode and cathode is equalized if the supply of fuel to anode is insufficient due to accumulation of inert gas. An independent claim is included for fuel cell system.
