New Anode Slotting Machine Offers Efficiency, Flexibility, and Cost Cutting

T.T. Tomorrow Technology, the Italian-based engineering and manufacturing company, which specializes in design and construction of vehicles and equipment for the aluminum industry, has introduced its newly patented Anode Slotting Machine for cutting slots on different size carbon anodes. The machine also offers a wide flexibility in slot depths and shapes as well as long blade life. The Anode Slotting Machine provides a solution to a common problem encountered in the anode plant. The main purpose for cutting slots on a carbon anode is to maximize the escape of bubbles of gas (CO_2, CO) released during electrolysis at the bottom of the anode. If not dispersed, these gas bubbles may combine with the carbon (reducing anode life) and form a gas film on the anode surface that can partially insulate it from the bath, thus reducing efficiency of the reduction process. As long as the gas bubbles generated on the vertical side of the carbon anode are easily released, those generated on the bottom side tend to stay trapped, unless the presence of slots helps them to escape.
