Extrusion process advancements are being equaled by creative minds in die design (Figure 3). As the extrusion bar keeps moving upward, tooling will be developed to equal the task. As new designs are being developed, it will take some different mindsets to properly utilize these designs. Some of the standard practices used today, i.e., stripping the die, will become obsolete and other methods will be developed. We are living in some exciting times in the extrusion industry, and as extrusion process technology advances, we must form alliances to develop strategies to produce next-generation shapes. Extruders need to take a look at the tooling, both support and die designs, being used within their facilities, and decide if they are moving ahead fast enough to benefit from the opportunities that will come with tomorrow's demands.
