2004 China Aluminum Forum Conference Review

The 2004 China Aluminum Forum, hosted by the China Nonferrous Metal Industry Association and organized by Beijing Antaike Information Development Co., Ltd. (Antaike), was held on December 8-10, 2004, in Haikou City, Hainan, China (Figure 1). The Forum was co-hosted by Aluminum Corporation of China Limited, China Minmetals Nonferrous Metals Co., Ltd., and Shanghai Future Exchange; and supported by the International Aluminum Institute, Japan Aluminum Association, The Aluminum Association, and CRU. It was also sponsored by Alcoa Inc., Hydro Aluminum, Alcan Inc., BHP Billiton Aluminum, Comalco Aluminum Ltd., Otto Junker Group, Gerald Metal, Mitsui & Co., Ltd., Solios, Ram Kiu Al Group, C. S. Aluminum Corp., and Guangdong Nonferrous Metals Technology Innovation Center. This was a very successful conference, with approximately 700 attendees, 300 of which were foreign delegates from 31 different countries. The conference focused on the discussion of: new developments in China's aluminum industry and the reciprocity with the global aluminum industry; development directions of China's aluminum industry in the new market and policy environment; the formation of a global manufacturing base and the development of China's aluminum fabrication industry; and the challenges and opportunities of sustainable development in the Chinese aluminum industry. As a widely used metal material, aluminum has great significance for global economic development. Aluminum applications have undergone rapid development in the span of 100 years, ever since industrialized production was realized. Global primary aluminum production has grown from thousands of metric tons in the beginning of the 20~(th) century to 26 million metric tons at the end of the 20~(th) century. Aluminum is among those materials that are experiencing the fastest growth increase in terms of applications.
