The Qatalum primary aluminum smelter, a crowning achievement of the joint venture between Norsk Hydro and Qatar, was officially inaugurated by royalty (Figure 1) on April 12, 2010 in a memorable event held in the ceremony hall in Mes-said Industrial City, Qatar. This inauguration ceremony, attended by some 650 guests, was more than a celebration of a major industrial achievement in the aluminum industry; the ceremony theme "Al_2to_3gether" symbolized the partnership of Qatar Petroleum and Hydro, and the cooperation between Qatar and Norway on a major industrial project that brings Qatalum into the global aluminum market. It represents one of the largest Norwegian projects outside of Norway and a major commitment to primary aluminum production.
