Ductile Aluminum High-Pressure Die Casting Alloys for Automotive Applications

The development of ductile aluminum alloys for high-pressure die casting during the last ten years has offered the automotive industry more and more options for design applications in a lighter and more cost-efficient way. This development was introduced with Silafont-36 as the first ductile alloy, by reducing the iron content and giving the eutectic a permanent modification with strontium. Solving the die sticking problem by adding manganese made this alloy suitable for large quantity production. With adequate heat treatment, a wide variety of requirements can be met. Magsimal-59 offers a superior yield strength, elongation, and fatigue strength in temper F, allowing parts to be produced in high-pressure die casting which are subjected to high loads and require high ductility at the same time. The different casting behavior due to a stronger shrinkage during solidification compared to AlSi-type alloys must be taken into account. Castasil-37 is an AlSi-type alloy with an advanced elongation and a medium yield strength in temper F. This makes it an ideal alloy for structural parts with complicated designs requiring excellent casting abilities. Providing suitable mechanical properties in the as-cast state makes a solution heat treatment obsolete, along with the resulting problems of blistering, distortion, and straightening.
