Ultrasonic Degassing Process for Continuous and Stationary Mold Casting of Aluminum

The SCR Technologies division of Southwire Company, LLC recently introduced the Ultra-D~(TM) degasser, which ul-trasonically removes hydrogen gas, alkali metals, and other harmful inclusions from molten aluminum. The development process started in 2008 with the objective to improve molten metal degassing, including the elimination of chlorine gas, used in the rotary degassers at the Southwire Kentucky aluminum rod mill. The plant produces 13 different alloys on three rod lines, based on the SCR casting and rolling process. Lines 1 and 2 primarily produce EC and lower alloy rod, while Line 3 produces nine different alloys, including high alloy rod. The total production capacity of the plant is 250,000 tpy.
