In the production of extrusion billets and forging stock, there are two well-established continuous casting processes. The first and most common type is vertical DC Casting (VDC). The second type is horizontal DC Casting (VDC). The advantages of the HDC process, like lower investment cost, higher flexibility, and longer casting times, are most apparent when casting small diameter billets at a high tonnage per hour. HDC-machines are usually part of a complex production line. At the start of this line there is the melting furnace, which produces liquid metal from remelt ingots and production scrap. From there, the liquid metal is led through a launder system via holding furnace, level controller, degassing unit, grain refiner station, and filter box to the casting machine.
