Mercury Castings: North America's Only Pressurized Lost Foam Foundry

Mercury Marine officials, along with Wisconsin Governor Scott McCallum and U.S. Department of Energy representatives, officially opened North America's only pressurized lost foam foundry on May 8, 2001, at Mercury Marine world headquarters at Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. The new Mercury Castings pressure lost foam foundry features a state-of-the-art pressurized technology applied to aluminum alloys during casting. Compared with aluminum castings produced on gravity lost foam casting lines, the Mercury Castings pressurized lost foam process lowers porosity to nearly undetectable levels, increases cyclic fatigue life by an average of 50 percent, allows Mercury Castings to create hypereutectic (high silicon) aluminum components in the process, and produces a high-quality product. As the only company in North America to offer aluminum lost foam casting under pressure, Mercury Castings has also patented a new low-copper hypereutectic Al-Si alloy (Mercosil), which now has The Aluminum Association designation of 391 for casting.
