LNG supply and demand in Q2 ‘16 - Supply growth accelerates as output from Australia builds-up

LNG supply increased by 7.4% in the second quarter, a return to the long-term growth rates seen before 2011. The main contribution to the growth was from Australia, where the four liquefaction trains in Queensland that came on stream in 2015 and early 2016 are already operating at above design capacity. Output from the first train at the Sabine Pass plant in the US added to the growth in supply but the performance by plants elsewhere in the world was mixed. With 12.6 mtpa of new capacity expected to start-up in H2 ‘16, supply is expected to continue to grow rapidly over the remaining months of 2016.
