Q1 ’15 LNG supply increases in the Pacific basin and demand increases in Europe

The start-up of three new liquefaction trains in the Pacific basin since May 2014 helped boost LNG supply to a record quarterly total of 63.98 mt in Q1 ’15. The additional supply came at a time when demand growth has been weakening in Asia’s main markets. As a result, the impact of increased supply in the Pacific basin was seen largely in Europe where LNG imports (net of re-exports) increased by 30.8%. Gas Strategies reviews LNG supply and demand in Q1 ’15 and considers the implications for the remainder of 2015.
