The present theme issue of Norsk Geografisk Tidsskrift–Norwegian Journal of Geography explores how in the present era of increasing globalism and transnationalism more and more people live on the move (Cresswell 2006; 2011; Rigg 2007; King 2011). This ‘mobility turn’ (of individuals, commodities, disease, organizations, and knowledge) characterizes not only industrial societies but also the present development of the Global South (Lund et al. 2013). To date, the Global North has been the primary site of innovation, ideas, and development. This is reflected in recent academic discourses, which are basically Westernoriented. In this theme issue we try to build knowledge on the quest by Jonathan Rigg (2007), who argued that there is a need to develop a ‘new mobilities paradigm’ with a southern focus in the social sciences when present forms of mobility and livelihoods are explored. We aim to help to fill this gap by presenting the findings of original research on a selected range of mobility issues in a wide range of Asian contexts.
