Many people complain that their infield skin surfaces are too hard, too soft, too tight or too loose. Some of these problems may be due to improper maintenance or recent weather. For instance, if the infield skin is spiked or nail-dragged too deeply, players may complain it's too soft or too loose. Daily nail-dragging should only penetrate the soil deep enough to smooth dear marks and minor ripples in the playing surface. Typically, that means only penetrating the top 1/2 in. - 3/4 in. of the skin portion of the infield An extended period of heat and drought can cause an infield to become very hard. Unfortunately, many of the park and recreation directors that maintain baseball fields can't do much about this because their fields aren't irrigated whatsoever.
