The ecology and culture of landscape sustainability: emerging knowledge and innovation in landscape research and practice

As Naveh (2007) points out, only a few countries in the world have fully recognized the potential of the landscape perspective as the most suitable for sustainable development. I organized this special issue to help address this gap that Naveh and many landscape researchers and practitioners have identified about the importance of the holistic landscape perspective and integrative approaches in the debate about sustainable development and sustainable transitions (e.g., Naveh 1995, 2000, 2001, 2007; Hobbs 1997; Li 2000; Palang et al. 2000; Barrett 2001; Fry 2001; Tress and Tress 2001; Tress et al. 2001; Wu and Hobbs 2002; Musacchio and Wu 2004; Musacchio et al. 2005; Wu 2006, 2008; Musacchio 2008, 2009a, 2009b; Tress et al. 2009). I selected the title about ecology and culture of landscape sustainability because it embodies the need to holistically integrate the best of what is known from landscape research and practice to benefit human health, ecosystem services, and resource management in an urbanizing world. We need to weave together what Wu (2006, p. 1) calls the “society-centered holistic view” and “bioecology-centered spatial view” in order to achieve Naveh’s goal of “post-industrial symbiosis of human society and nature” (Naveh 2007,
