Figure 9 below plots labour rates per worker against output per worker to show the relative productivity versus labour cost for gold mines around the world. Even high productivity in terms of output per worker (at an estimated 450oz in 2013), Australia’s high labour costs put it on the unfavourable side of the competitiveness curve, while the US, which also benefits from high productivity, enjoys an advantage with considerably lower wages.
