The Middle East has always been a volatile place. Since the end of the cold war, it has been the source of more global angst and instability than anywhere else on the plant. The reason for its global influence is obvious – the important role it plays in the oil supply chain. Whilst the memory of the oil shocks remains, this is not about to change any time soon. However, if history is to offer much of a precedent, there are things to be learnt and opportunities to be had.
