Treatment charges paid to Chinese smelters have fallen quite significantly in recent months as a tightening concentrate market weighs on smelter margins. Current levels at $55/pmt in February would render many smelters uneconomic: Indeed, while the finished zinc market has been accumulating surpluses from 2007 the concentrate market has been tight since 2009 as mine closures and falling head grades have weighed on supply growth.
