Applying lasers in gravure print formfabrication is getting more and more im-portant due to a high machining rate, high spatial resolution and the ability ofdigital modulation. Direct laser engravinginto the metallic surface is the fastest andmost versatile process for gravure cylinderimaging (ablation rate up to 1 cm3/min).High power Q-switch Nd:YAG and fiberlasers up to repetition rates of 100 kHz areused, tuned for high reproducibility andstability. A fast modulation of the laserbeam profile for each single pulse allowsfor optimization of the cell shape to getthe best ink transfer interaction on a spe-cific print substrate. Highest screen reso-lutions are made with single mode cw fi-ber lasers > 100 W.
