Solid samples including herbs, instant coffee, and polymer films were analyzed using GC with three direct sample Introduction techniques: static headspace, solid phase microextraction, and thermal desorption, all with the same GC instrument. Generally, sensitivity of static headspace sampling was found to be 10 to 50 times lower than SPME sampling. Thermal desorption sampling was found to produce 10 to more than 100 times greater sensitivity than SPME sampling.
