Mufflers are widely used in industry for noise reduction in vehicles or exhaust pulsation attenuation in machinery. Various modeling schemes have been employed in the past for the analysis of muffler acoustical performance, However, it is often encountered in practical applications that a suitable modeling method must be chosen for each specific case because all modeling methods have different advantages and limitations, This study evaluates several existing analytical methods, including: a lumped parameter method, a one-dimensional (1-D) traveling wave method, and one-, two-, and three-dimensional (3-D) modeling schemes based on a modal series expansion method. Eight realistic mufflers with different geometries are used as examples for evaluation. Predictions from the various modeling methods are compared to experimental results for these mufflers. The applicability of each method for each case is discussed in order to provide an indication of the use and suitability of different modeling methods, (C) 1998 Institute of Noise Control Engineering.
