ENGINE DEVELOPMENT - The development and launch of the JCB444 diesel engine

The presentation started with a short introduction to JCB, now 60 years old and with a turnover of ￡ 1.2 billion. This equates to nearly ￡200,000 per direct employee. The company had been directed to look at developing their own engine twice in the past once in the mid 1970's and again in the late 1980's as a means of securing supply of a core component of production. In 1970 and again in 1982 engine supply had been a major problem. These projects had not been taken forward to production for commercial rather than technical reasons.
