Maduro seeks to continue Chavez oil partnerships

Venezuelan acting-president Nicolas Maduro, the officially designated heir to the late Hugo Chavez, plans to visit China immediately after his predicted victory over Henrique Capriles in 14 April elections. Capriles — the twice-elected governor of Miranda state — was defeated by Chavez in October presidential elections (ALE, 9 October, p4). “Very soon, after our country goes to the polls, we will go [to Beijing] with our triumph in hand to ratify in the name of the spirit of our commander Chavez this path of co-operation with China for 100 more years,” Maduro said during a meeting on 8 March with a Chinese delegation headed by economic planning body NDRC president Zhang Ping.
