On the face of it,there's little to connect the current debate over the future of GM crops and the spectacular rise of fluorescence microscopy in the last few decades. But the genetic modification techniques fuelling the growth of both technologies have common roots.Biologists can now visualise the dynamics of the cell's biological processes in high contrast and minute detail only because the genes controlling the bioluminescence mechanism of a jellyfish are routinely fused with the genetic material of plants, fungi and animals to tag cellular proteins and study their movement and function.
