ClSPLATIN IS A PLATINUM-BASED DRUG USED FOR THE TREATMENT Of VARIOUS TYPES OF CANEERS,HOWEVER THE DRUG HAS SIDE EFFECTS,SOME OF WHICH ARE LINKED TO THE ABILITY OF THE DRUG TO INDUCE REACTIVE OXYGEN SPECIES PRODUCTION,SO CAUSING MALONDIALDEHYDE(MDA)PRODUCTION(THE END PRODUCTS OF LIPID PEROXIDATION),WHICH ARE TOXIC TO CELLS.THIS STUDY SEEKS TO DETERMINE THE ABILITY OF SOUR AND GREEN TEAS TO INHIBIT CISPLATIN-INDUCED MALONDIALDEHYDE(MDA)PRODUCTION IN BRAIN AND LIVER(IN VITRO).THESE TEAS COULD BE POTENTIAL DIETARY SOURCES ABLE TO MANAGE/PREVENT SOME SIDE EFFECTS ASSOEIATED WITH ClSPLATIN CHEMOTHERAPY.HOT WATER EXTRACTS OF BOTH TEAS WERE PREPARED,THE INHIBITORY EFFECT OF BOTH TEAS ON BASAL AND ClSPLATIN(0-333.3 mu M)INDUCED OXIDATIVE STRESS WERE DETERMINED ON ISOLATED RAT'S BRAIN AND LIVER.THE TOTAL PHENOL CONTENT,FERRIC REDUCING/ ANTIOXIDANT PROPERTY(FRAP)AND THE INHIBITION OF CISPLATIN-INDUCED OH* PRODUCTION OF THE TEAS WERE ALSO DETERMINED.INCUBATION OF THE BRAIN AND LIVER IN THE PRESENCE OF ClSPLATIN CAUSED A DOSE DEPENDENT INCREASE IN THE MDA CONTENT OF THE BRAIN(122.0-222.8 NMOL./G)AND LIVER(180.4-294.0 NMOL/G).HOWEVER,BOTH TEAS(3MG/ML)CAUSED A SIGNIFICANT DECREASE IN THE MDA CONTENT OF THE BRAIN [GREEN TEA(56.6-73.5 NMOL/G),SOUR TEA(70.4-92.0 NMOL/G)] ANO LIVER [GREEN TEA(76.2-112.3 NMOL/G),SOUR TEA(84.2-136.2 NMOL/G)].GREEN TEA HAD A SIGNIFICANTLY HIGHER(P<0.05)INHIBITORY EFFECT ON MDA PRODUCTION THAN THE SOUR TEA,WHICH COULD BE DUE TO ITS SIGNIFICANTLY HIGHER TOTAL PHENOL CONTENT,FRAP AND INHIBITORY EFFECT ON ClSPLATIN INDUCED OH* PRODUCTION.THEREFORE,GREEN AND SOUR TEAS HAVE THE NUTRACEUTICAL POTENTIAL FOR THE MANAGEMENT/PREVENTION OF ClSPLATIN INDUCED OXIDATIVE STRESS IN THE BRAIN AND LIVER,GREEN TEA HAVING A GREATER ABILITY THAN SOUR TEA.
