Mortality in severe traumatic brain injury.

Jose Pineda and colleagues should be commended for their study1 showing a decrease in mortality rate in children with severe traumatic brain injury from 11% before implementation of a paediatric neurocritical care programme, to 3% after implementation. The reported 3% mortality rate in children admitted to a paediatric intensive-care unit is a substantial improvement in outcome and should be regarded as a valuable objective for all those dealing with severe paediatric traumatic brain injury.
