If ALICE EVER wanders, out of Wonderland to visit Tauranga, she should knock on Debby and John Meldrum's front door. She'd appreciate their home's jauntily slanting walls and window frames. She could pause in the courtyard to chat with the corrugatediron pig whose snout faces the living room's boldly patterned, wild-hued chairs and couches. Given Debby's fondness for theatrical folk, a fantastic party in Alice's honour could be on the cards. Regular non-fiction folks have been enjoying the Mcldrums'hospilalily - and Debby's sense of fun - on this harbour-front site for decades. But now, thanks to a long-awaited building project, the couple's "rumpty" former abode has been superseded by a slightly surreal contemporary home. In some rooms, sloping ceilings and leaning bookshelves create a three-dimensional optical illusion that makes visitors wonder if they are standing straight. Apparently the guest bathroom's dearth of 90-degree angles makes some people nervous.
