When julia deville was a child her father took her for a country walk. So far, so normal. But when they encountered an isolated church and in it, unattended,a dead woman in an open coffin, Julia had an experience fundamental to her attitude to bodies and death."My dad, who's quite eccentric, encouraged me to feel her face and feel the difference and that was my first experience of a dead body. When both grandmothers died I was allowed to touch them and for me that created a real separation between life and death."
