摘要

Although more than 1,500 nurses lost their lives serving in the two world wars, there is no national memorial to that sacrifice. According to historian and former nurse Yvonne McEwen, that is a disgrace. 'History has ignored these women,' she says. 'Nurses suffered dreadful things - the same privations as the men who were fighting. There was disease, such as typhus, dysentery and smallpox. They went through aerial bombardments, and many drowned, torpedoed on troop ships.'
