For almost all nurses and midwives in the UK, the only contact they have with the nurse regulator is when they pay the annual fee of ￡76.This fee, which generates ￡52 million a year, should enable the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) to set standards, hold a register and judge the fitness to practise (FtP) of registrants.But a damning report into management and governance at the regulator reveals an organisation devoid of leadership and financial planning, and dogged by poor working relationships.
