Media stereotypes of today's nursing students distort the true picture

I have read many articles in the mainstream media recently about students Sacking the fundamental skills to provide good patient care. There is a stereotypical view of students as incapable, uncaring and poorly trained.There have been many changes to nurse training over the years and the impact of these changes continues to be debated. Yet there is little discussion of the individual drive, motivation and compassion that drew many of us into nurse training in the first place and carries us through to registration. It is time to give nursing students a chance.I am a first-year student at the University of Salford, which has adopted the Nursing and Midwifery Council standards in its degree programmes. This is yet another change to nurse training and the outcomes are as yet unknown. But I am optimistic that my course will provide me with excellent training.I know I will be a good nurse. I am passionate about nursing as my career and am determined to succeed.Kay Ward, by email
