Emergency nurses resorted to asking a charity to buy them personal safety alarms after hospital managers cut security staff posts. Guards were removed from Royal Lancaster Infirmary despite opposition from staff and unions, who warned managers that patients could be violent towards clinicians. The decision to axe the posts in April last year was highlighted in a damning report by health regulator the Care Quality Commission (CQC). Last week's report also revealed that several staff members had not received training on conflict resolution, despite the security cuts.
