A mental health trust is paying for its nurses to top up their diplomas to degrees as part of a bid to achieve an excellence in nursing quality standard. The South London and Maudsley (SLAM) NHS Foundation Trust has paid for ward managers, ward sisters and band 6 nurses to attain the degrees ahead of when nursing becomes graduate-entry across the UK in 2014. Nineteen nurses started the study programme last year, with a further 18 due to begin working towards their degrees in May.
