Ask any nurse about PREP and you are likely to be told two things. First, they keep a folder at home in which they file certificates and course materials. Second, all nurses are meant to keep these folders as evidence of their continuing professional development, which the Nursing and Midwifery Council may demand to see at any time.On the first point they are correct. Post-registration education and practice (PREP) standards set by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) include a requirement for nurses to undertake at least 35 hours of learning relevant to practice during the three years before renewing their registration.However, the second assumption is incorrect -the NMC has never randomly called in any portfolios to inspect and, as things stand, has no plans to do so.
