Unrest Threatens Uranium Production

Local opposition to the Uranium Corporation of India Limited’s (UCIL) operations in Jharkhand are threatening India’s yellowcake production. Police say armed rebels “want to take UCIL under their control,” and a melee on Apr. 5 outside the Turamdih uranium mining and milling operation prompted management to threaten a shutdown (NIW Apr.11,p12). A more immediate problem is a water shortage that has already reduced Turamdih’s output.
