One of the best known garden centres in Scotland succeeds, as much as anything, by engaging its customers. It is an approach that last year won it the Marketing Campaign category in the Nurseryman & Garden Centre Awards. Five years ago, when Dougal Philip and his team quit the garden centre they had established from scratch near Queensferry on the Firth of Forth, it was a wrench. They had to start over again. They had been given notice by the Trust that maintains Hopetoun House, one of the finest Robert Adam houses in lowland Scotland and in whose walled garden they had set up shop.
