Andy Campbell looks at the pro's and con's of running a gift department. Question - When is a gift not a gift? Answer - When it is bought for one's own use. Garden centres have been selling functional products for the garden to gardeners for their own use ever since garden centres began. Then as time passed more and more decorative items for the garden were introduced, not least the plants started to be reconsidered as decorative lines rather than plants for a purpose. After that, products for the home started to make an entrance, followed by anything writh a tenuous link to the home, garden or leisure in its widest context.
