On the chilly New England Sawrday evening of November 28, 1942, the Cocoanut Grove was packed beycmd capacity with upwards of 1,000 people. Just after 10 p.m. in the Melody Lounge located in the basement, a small fire broke out in a fake palm tree, and then quickly spread across the ceiling decorations.
