The world is small and so it seemed as I attended the International Council of Nurses (ICN) Congress in June in Seoul, South Korea. Dr. Margaret Chen, Director General of the World Health Organization (WHO), said that, in light of the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) outbreak and the ongoing struggle with Ebola, we need to recognize that diseases do not need visas to cross country lines. In a mobile society an exotic disease may be transported in a few short hours around the world. However, despite the MERS outbreak over 5000 nurses from 119 countries attended. The ICN theme "Global Citizen, Global Nursing" fits so well with this issue of NAINR. The articles highlight neonatal nurses from around the world whose work is impacting countless lives. The challenges faced in one country are often not that different from those in many other countries. Yes, resources are different, types of health problems may vary, but not the nurse's role in providing care and impacting health outcomes.
