Production in the new Federal Lander has stabilised at a low level. The region's potential is not yet fully exhausted.

The area under potato production in the new Federal Lander of Germany has fallen very sharply from 337 136 ha in 1990 to 58 527 in 2000. At the same time average yields have risen from 201.9 dt/ha to 319.1 dt/ha although this is still below the westGerman average of 388.2 dt/ha. Current production no longer covers regional demand either for ware or industrial potatoes. If advantage is to be taken of the potential for further expansion of production, greater attention must be paid to the productionof quality product. This will require increased investment both in technical equipment and cold storage facilities to extend the marketing season for the domestic product.
