Field studies were carried out during 1991-93 at 2 sites in Hessen, Germany, to investigate the effect of pre-germination on plant diseases in 4 potato cultivars (Agria, Granola, Linda and Nicola). Pre-germination resulted in cv. Agria in greater incidence of Alternaria spp. The incidence of Phytophthora infestans was influenced by foliage age and the proportion of dried foliage. Streptomyces scabies incidence in pre-germinated potatoes was less severe than in non-germinated, probably due to lowersoil moisture levels at the start of tuber formation. Pre-germination did not influence Rhizoctonia solani, iron spots or potato Y potyvirusNTN. The incidence of hollow heart in cv. Agria was greater (9.5%) in pre-germinated potatoes than in non-germinated potatoes(1.5%).
