The effects of oats, barley, potatoes and sugarbeet on the 1st and 2nd crops of winter and spring wheat, and the effects of turnip rape [Brassica campestris] and field peas grown alternately, were compared in 1981-89. Oats increased the first cropsof winter and spring wheat by 8-9%, while barley had no significant effect compared with continuous wheat. The turnip rape/pea combination increased grain yields of spring and winter wheat by 18 and 21%, respectively. Potatoes increased wheat yield by anaverage of 15% compared with continuous wheat, with the increase ranging from 40% at a low N rate to 6% with high N application. Averaged over 5 years, sugarbeet increased spring wheat yield by 18%, but the use of sugarbeet was later discontinued due tocultivation problems.
