Janie Taylor's earliest memories are of gardens and green spaces. As a child in Glasgow, she remembers watching the lucky folk who had access to an enclosed garden, open only to key holders. "I'd peer through the railings until they got fed up and threw things at me," she recalls. Her family emigrated to New Zealand when Janie was seven, but she returned to Glasgow some years later as a student. When her father rang and asked what she'd like most after the long sea voyage, she said "a box of grass to stand on in bare feet". She didn't get her wish, but at every port of call Janie sought out parks for the calming effect of grass underfoot.
