It's a sobering thought that within our gardens there's the potential for immense good or extreme evil. On the one hand we give wildlife a helping hand - plant a kowhai and hang up some nuts for the birds - but on the other we kick nature in the teeth. It's admittedly often done in ignorance - the tossing of garden rubbish over the fence when no one is looking, birds stealing the seed of a moth plant that we never realised had the potential to blanket tracts of pristine forest - but it's still we gardeners who deserve the blame.
