WHEN IT COMES to proper performance utes, the field gets narrowed down to one as soon as you start asking more in terms of chassis dynamics. The Ford Ranger Raptor feels virtually indestructible, and has been designed from the ground up as a vehicle capable of absorbing the sort of bone-crunching punishment that would leave its claimed rivals in steaming pieces. Is it a surprise that more brands haven't built a genuine Raptor rival? Given the Ford's popularity, it does seem a missed opportunity. But it's not easy. The Raptor has an entirely different rear structure to a regular Ranger and some of the costliest suspension of any sub-$100K vehicle. The upshot is that if you're in the market for a proper performance dual-cab that's hugely capable at high-speed off-roading, yet is still comfortable enough to drive every day, then your choice is clear.
